What this mod does
Not a brute-force upscale. This pack rebuilds 796 textures of the game world (terrain, vegetation, architecture, clutter, decals, effects, creature skins, blood splatters...) at exactly twice their vanilla resolution, with the most powerful upscaling tool available: Topaz Gigapixel.
Every texture is upscaled by five Gigapixel models (Standard, High Fidelity, Low Res, Text & Shapes, Art & CG). Each result is measured against the vanilla original (fidelity, recovered detail, colour, transparency, seamless tiling) and only the best one is kept. No single model wins everywhere: Standard is best on about two thirds of the textures, Text & Shapes on a fifth, High Fidelity on an eighth, and Art & CG and Low Res take the few that remain.
- AI detail recovery, not "resize + sharpen": edge-aware upscaling that preserves fine geometry (stone edges, wood grain, foliage veins) while removing compression noise and avoiding halo artifacts.
- Built to match the vanilla files: same format as the original (BC1, BC3 or BC7), same header, full mip chains. Transparent textures are handled like the vanilla ones: no dark halos around cut-out edges in the lower mips, and fine ones (cobwebs, lace, nets) keep their coverage at a distance.
- Albedo/BaseColor only: normal and physical maps are left intact. AI-upscaling those typically introduces lighting errors without any real in-engine gain.
- Strict 2× resolution (1K→2K, 2K→4K). Beyond 2× the visual return is minimal compared with the VRAM cost, so this pack targets the sweet spot for clarity and performance. Textures that are already 4096 px or larger in vanilla are left untouched.
What's new in this update
- Every texture was redone from the vanilla originals with the five-model selection described above.
- A stricter export: every DDS now copies the exact format, header and mip structure of its vanilla file, with higher-quality BC1/BC3 compression.
- Lighter: textures that are 4096 px or larger in vanilla (they used to become 8K-16K) and textures the game never uses are no longer included. About 27% less texture data than before.
- 53 new textures, all effects: butterflies, moths, bees, locusts, leaves, droplets, damage effects, portal images...
Which parts do I need?
Five independent parts: install all of them, or only the ones you want.
- Part 1 - Nature (166 textures): terrain and ground textures, tileable materials, vegetation, rocks.
- Part 2 - Architecture (99): tilesets (walls, floors, ceilings), buildings, doors, puzzles.
- Part 3 - Effects (242): decals (blood, dirt, grunge...) and visual effects, including the new ones.
- Part 4 - Items (116): decoration, furniture, consumables, loot, containers, weapons, tools, books.
- Part 5 - Characters (173): creatures, human armour and clothing, tiefling skins and horns, shared fur. The standard skins of the other playable races are not touched, so face and body mods for them won't conflict (tiefling skin and horn mods might).
Compatibility
- Other texture upscales: don't stack them. BG3 Texture Upscale Project (BG3TUP), for example, replaces about 385 of the same textures, so only one of the two can win on each file. It isn't recommended together with this pack.
- Vivid Landscapes is the one exception. The textures already covered by the Vivid Landscapes series (All in One, Camp and Druid Tents) are not included here, so the two don't overlap at all. I consider it essential and highly recommend installing both; the load order doesn't matter.
- High Quality Paintings and Portraits: 9 painting textures are in both mods (the load order decides which one you see); its other files are complementary.
Performance
Each texture has 4× the pixels of the vanilla one it replaces and uses about 4× the memory, so expect higher VRAM usage than vanilla; a modern GPU is recommended. The parts are independent: with 8 GB of VRAM or less, install only the ones that matter most to you.
If textures load late during close-up dialogues, install fewer parts or cap your frame rate: both are reported to help.
Installation
- Pack version: drop the .zip files in BG3MM. You should see five "Immersive World Textures - Part N" entries.
- Loose files version: copy/paste the Generated folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data.
- Updating from an older version: with the pack version, simply replace the old files. With the loose version, delete the old Generated files first: 85 textures were removed (the 8K ones included) and the old copies would keep overriding the vanilla files.
- Multiplayer: the pack version is a regular mod, so every player should have the same parts installed. The loose files version is invisible to the game and only changes what you see.
